Cobalt / 30 Degrees (Closed Permanently)

(422 Ratings)
Hip lounge downstairs, dance club upstairs, special theme nights
Cobalt is a 17th St mainstay, anchoring DC's gayest street. Cobalt recently renovated interior creates a new sophisticated downstairs lounge while maintaining the pulsating upstairs dance floor. The kinda place you can meet for cocktails and conversation and then, if the mood strikes, take it upstairs for a wilder night out.

young & bitchy

The layout of the place it really nice, but the crowd was the young, gay, pretentious type at it's worst. If you're not already part of a hip-click, don't expect anyone to speak to you. I would skip the place altogether.

Martini's

This is a great place for Martini's with a welcoming atmosphere and less stuffy than some others along the 17th St strip! Worth the visit - great on weekends!

Full of attractive younger guys

This is clearly the "hot spot" in Dupont. I went on a Thursday and the crowd started rolling in around 11 for the "Batlle of the Briefs" at 12. The downstairs lounge area feels like a high end living room, upstairs is a mid-size dance floor with shirtless (and hot) bartenders. I'd agree with the other reviewers that the crowd here is young, cute and keenly aware of fashion - yep, diesel t-shirts and trendy haircuts everywhere.

Uber Trendy Fashionistas Throwing Shade.

These bars are places you will either LOVE or HATE! VERY popular, but it can be very painful to those who don't fit the "gay standards" of the self-professed arbiters of what is, or is not, good enough for them. If you are young, thin, chic, and into what is "IN" this very second, this is the place for you. Very close to 4 other gay bars on the same strip.

Fun place!

Cobalt is a loud, crowded, and FUN place to be after midnight on a Friday or Saturday! Downstairs is a lounge area (called 30 Degrees because of the blast of chilly air that blows near the bar); upstairs has a small, but hopping, dance area that features some terrific techno DJs and hot, shirtless bartenders. Cobalt is 21+, and the crowd tends to be on the young side of that, but there's enough of an age mix that somewhat older folks (like me) still fit in. Friday and Saturday are the best nights, of course, but Cobalt has karaoke on Sunday nights; a very popular '80s music night on Tuesdays; and the "Best Package Contest" on Thursdays. Finally, you didn't hear this from me, but after 2 am on weekends, Cobalt is probably one of the better places in DC to meet cute guys for short-term relationships.
