Leftwing DC is anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic fútbol. We aim to use the beautiful game of soccer to tear down these internalized toxic forces and build community with the hope of transfering what we learn and relearn into the everyday world. Our fútbol recognizes that all of us need to grow and heal. Every game ends in 2-2, everyone touches the ball, everyone is essential to the play.
Our fútbol is POC-led and grounded in the knowledge that athletics often marginalize, exclude, and oppress those who do not identify as cis, straight, white, and/or men. We want to center those who are historically and continually excluded from competitive sports. We recognize that Women, Trans, Queer, and GNC includes a broad and multifaceted group of people and that not everyone who embodies one or more of these identities will experience the game of fútbol the same way. By devoting a game to Women, Trans, Queer, and GNC folks, we do not aim to equate the realities of any two people taking the field together. We acknowledge, however, that these members of our community are negatively affected by the patriarchal values that can so easily manifest themselves on the fútbol field.
Leftwing is not a space for aggression or competition. It is a space for collaborating, supporting each other, and celebrating the successes of everyone on the field!
Q. Who can play in this game?
A. Only women, trans, gender nonconforming, gender nonbinary and queer individuals will be invited to play in this game. Cisgender* straight men are welcome to cheer from the sidelines, bring food, and water. We hope to create a space on the field that is welcoming for all WTGNCQ players, but no one should feel obligated to participate at a level that is beyond what feels good to them.
Q. Can I play if I've never played before?
A. Absolutely! Many of our regulars never played soccer before they stepped onto the field with LWDC. We encourage and welcome people of all skill levels.
Q. So if I'm a cisgender male, should I stay home that day?
A. No way! We really hope that cisgender straight men will still show up to support as allies. Cheer our players on, watch after children, keep time, bring food, and open yourself up to learning about the ways in which you contribute to toxic forces.
All interested women, trans, GNC and queer folks are welcome to simply show up and play. Bring cleats or comfortable running shoes, clothes for working up a sweat, and some water.
*Cisgender: Relating to a person whose gender identity aligns with what they were assigned at birth.
