What can white people do about systemic racism? This seven-week workshop is designed for white people who want to be more effective working for racial justice. Participants will explore the historical development as well as the contemporary implications of racism in the United States, how structural racism affects community organizing and activism, and how to effectively use power and privilege in promoting equity and mitigating the forces of racism. Participants will work to develop an anti-racist action plan to help them deepen their own understanding of racial equity and to build racial equity within their own circles of influence. Action plans will fit for each participant and may range from self-education, to interpersonal relationships, to public policy and may include workplaces, faith communities, college campuses, collectives, neighborhoods or other spaces where the participant may have the capacity to make change.
Participation will require a commitment of 28 hours of classroom time, plus 2-3 hours between sessions for reading and meeting with a learning partner.
If you need specific accommodations, please let us know and we will do our best to meet your need(s).
This workshop is developed and delivered by Baltimore Racial Justice Action (BRJA). BRJA is a network of Maryland individuals committed to social and economic transformation with an emphasis on racial equity. BRJA is an action-based organization grounded in collective analysis of structural racism and white privilege. Organizing across the Baltimore metropolitan area, BRJA seeks to make Baltimore recognized as the leading city in the nation intentionally working for racial equity.
Planned in collaboration with the DC Chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ). SURJ is a national network of groups and individuals organizing White people for racial justice. Through community organizing, mobilizing, and education, SURJ moves White people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. We work to connect people across the country while supporting and collaborating with local and national racial justice organizing efforts. SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills and political analysis to act for change.
