Lady Day was unhappy with Verve as she had wanted to make a record of Gershwin recordings but they songs were given to Ella Fitzgerald instead. Back at Columbia, she was matched up with producer Irving Townsend and bandleader Ray Ellis and this time they recorded with grand orchestral arrangements. However, despite the heavy instrumentation, for her swansong Billie achieved something delicate and beautiful.
