Inspired by the "Camp Obama" training that powered neighbor-to-neighbor organizing across America in 2008, Camp Courage is a popular and highly-regarded training program that teaches the principles and skills of community organizing to activists working to promote full LGBT equality.
Born in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8 and sponsored by the California-based Courage Campaign, Camp Courage draws on techniques honed for decades by progressive social movements, and teaches empowerment, team building, leadership development, and grassroots organizing skills.
Camp Courage has conducted trainings in Los Angeles, Fresno, San Diego, Oakland, and East Los Angeles, CA, creating 1,000 new community organizers. At the request of organizers of the National Equality March, Camp Courage is bringing this powerful training to the nation’s capital.
Attendees will be expected to commit to organizing to promote full LGBT equality in all matters governed by civil law. A background in community organizing or an organizational affiliation is not a requirement to attend Camp Courage. The only requirements are energy, commitment, and a desire to broaden your leadership abilities.
Camp Courage is organized by Torie Osborn, Mike Bonin, and Lisa Powell. Osborn is a senior advisor to United Way, a former senior advisor to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and former executive director of the Liberty Hill Foundation and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Bonin is a former regional field organizer for Obama for America, a veteran campaign staffer, and a community activist. Powell is an attorney, longtime trainer, community leader, and founder of Black Lesbians United.
