The African Diaspora Ancestral Commemoration Institute (ADACI) will host its 24th Annual International African Ancestral Commemoration entitled “Whispers From the Waters: Rediscovering and Reconnecting – Hearing the Voices of the Ancestors” in honor of the millions of African Ancestors who perished during the Middle Passage – the Maafa.
WHEN & WHERE: The activities will take place on Saturday, June 11th, 9:30 am – 2:00 pm, with a drum procession from Union Temple Baptist Church, 1225 W Street, SE, DC, to the Anacostia River for a spiritual healing ceremony, followed by a spiritual healing workshop at Union Temple Baptist Church.
PLEASE NOTE: All attendees are asked to wear white clothing.
ADACI’s annual commemoration focuses on the ongoing process of healing and restoration of collective memory by recapturing and reassembling the fragmented history of Africa and the African Diaspora. This year’s theme is “Whispers From the Waters: Rediscovering and Reconnecting – Hearing the Voices of the Ancestors.” The activities will begin on Saturday, June 11th at 9:30am, with A River Walk and Ancestral Healing Ceremony.
Simultaneous commemoration activities will take place in Africa on Goreé Island hosted by ADACI-Senegal, in Oshun State hosted by ADACI-Nigeria, Bahia, Brazil hosted by ADACI-Brazil, and Detroit, Michigan hosted by ADACI-Detroit.
ADACI is also one of the founding members of the International Coalition to Commemorate the Ancestors of the Middle Passage (ICCAAMP) which was founded in 2015 for coalition members to work together to remember the millions of nameless, faceless men, women and children who perished in the Middle Passage. This year, ICCAAMP declared the second weekend in June as the International Commemoration Weekend to remember the African Ancestors of the Maafa. For more information, please visit www.RememberTheAncestors.com.
We, ADACI and ICCAAMP, are calling on the African descended communities in the diaspora and on the African continent to join the coalition movement by hosting their own commemoration activities.
We hope to see you on June 11th!
