THE BANDS
The Sword
There’s an unspoken edict handed down through the ages when it comes to rock bands: there are no rules. Nobody picks up a guitar to be constricted or oppressed. It’s all about feeling free artistically. Now, The Sword—John Cronise [vocals, guitar], Kyle Shutt [guitar], Bryan Richie [bass], and Santiago Vela III [drums]—cut out boundaries since day one. Their style never stood predicated on a trend or a template. They always create what feels right and let the results speak for themselves.
Kvelertak
Kvelertak (meaning stranglehold or chokehold) is a six-piece black n roll band from Stavanger, formed in Norway, 2007. All lyrics are written in Norwegian, the band's native language, and concerning Norse mythology/Viking folklore. As of today, the six members are: Erlend Hjelvik (vocals), Vidar Landa (guitar), Bjarte Lund Rolland (guitar), Maciek Ofstad (guitar), Marvin Nygaard (bass), and Kjetil Gjermundrød (drums). Known for their consistent, idiosyncratic sound, the band states that their main influences are rock and roll, black metal and punk.In March 2011, Kvelertak was presented with two Spellemann Awards—a prestegious Norwegian music award similar to the American Grammy Award—for Best Newcomer and Best Rock Band.
Torche
Torche are a band consisting of four dudes playing the loudest and heaviest hard rock on the planet. Formed by vocalist and guitarist Steve Brooks in 2004 after the dissolution of cult sludge and stoner metal pioneers Floor, the group introduced the world to a refreshingly unique version of rock n’ roll flavored with stoner and sludgy sensibilities. Originally from Miami, Florida, but now peppered across the country, Torche have spent the last 10 years shattering eardrums and captivating crowds with their infectiously original compositions and soaring, harmonic vocals.
Serpent Throne
Arguably Philadelphia's best kept secret, Serpent Throne represent an authentic and righteous linkage to the revered '70's acts of yore. Think Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Blue Cheer, Leafhound, Pentagram, and Sir Lord Baltimore, only instrumental, and you're on your way.
Loud Boyz
Formed in 2014 in Washington, D.C., Loud Boyz collide punk, hardcore, and garage rock in a way that Vice's Noisey calls "the kind of music meant to be blared from rooftops." They've shared the stage as direct support for bands like The Buzzcocks, Marky Ramone, Andrew W.K., Darkest Hour, and Diarrhea Planet, at venues including 9:30 Club, Baltimore Soundstage, Howard Theatre and the Black Cat. Band members Brandon Brown, Alex Anderson, Devin Cassidy, Rory Sheridan, and Mitchell West rip through sets and shake shit up. The band's first EP was released on D.C. imprint Cricket Cemetery in January 2015, followed by a full length LP, Tough Love, Hard Feelings, released on July 10th.
THE BEERS
Austin Beerworks (Austin, TX) – “Celestial Garden” India Pale Lager
Will Golden and Adam Debower, 2 of the 4 founders of Austin Beerworks, are alum of Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewing Company along with Jeff. Both breweries opened around the same time, so the trio figured this was the perfect opportunity to collaborate on a brew. They decided to put a fun riff on the traditional India Pale Ale style with an IPL that incorporates 3 types of fruit puree to the brew.
Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL) – “The Wise and The Lovely” Imperial Stout
Jeff and his team have known the boys at Cigar City for a couple of years, and have been itching to work with them on a collaboration. The name derives from a poem written by Edna St. Vincent Millay, which has dark undertones in its context that fit perfectly with the almost pitch black color of this beer. “The Wise and the Lovely” is a strong stout brewed with lactose and cocoa nibs from Brazil.
Perennial Artisan Ales (St. Louis, MO) – “Pink Pallet Jack” Belgian-Style Saison
Fun fact: both Perennial and DC Brau own pink pallet jacks. The similar piece of brewery equipment lends its name to their collaboration. The “Pink Pallet Jack” takes a traditional style (Belgian-style Saison) and adds a twist with the addition of Rose Hips and Hibiscus, which will give the beer a “pinkish” hue.
Port City Brewing (Alexandria, VA) – “Zehn von Zehn” German-Style Dunkel
“Zehn von Zehn” is DC Brau and Port City’s take on a traditional German-Style Dunkel. The name, which translates to “10 by 10,” references Washington, DC’s original 10 mile by 10 mile border that included parts of Alexandria, VA. Both breweries opened their doors just weeks apart in 2011.
Sun King Brewing (Indianapolis, IN) – “Ripa the Dipa” Double IPA
“Ripa the Dipa,” brewed with our friends at Sun King Brewing, is a Double India Pale Ale brewed with malted and unmalted Rye. The name was strictly a working title, but everyone liked it so much, it stuck.
Tickets will go onsale this Friday, February 5th at 10am.
General admission tickets are $45 in advance; $60 at the door. Admission includes entry into the concert only; beer tickets for DC Brau beers and the special collaborations will be available on site the day of the event. Sloppy Mama’s BBQ, Red Apron, DC Slices, and Dangerously Delicious Pies food trucks will be accessible inside the festival grounds to provide food for purchase.
A limited number of VIP tickets will be available for $200, which gains ticketholders access inside the brewery for a VIP-only bar, catered barbecue, complimentary unlimited beer, and guaranteed access to all the collaboration brews.
The brewery’s regular growler hours will not be held that day, and growler fills will not be available during the event. The organizers ask that attendees consider alternative transportation options since parking is limited. A complimentary shuttle will operate between the Rhode Island metro stop and the brewery throughout the event.
