The NPS LGBTQ Heritage Initiative explores how the legacy of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals can be recognized, preserved, and interpreted for future generations. On May 30, 2014, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced a new theme study to identify places and events associated with the story of LGBTQ Americans for inclusion in the parks and programs of the NPS. The NPS LGBTQ Heritage Initiative is the latest effort in the proud NPS tradition of the documentation and interpretation of civil rights history. The NPS has already recognized the Stonewall Inn in New York City as a National Historic Landmark, and listed the Dr. Franklin E. Kameny residence in Washington, DC on the National Register of Historic Sites. For more information about the initiative, please visit http://www.nps.gov/history/heritageinitiatives/LGBThistory/
