Join us for the 5th Annual synchronized swimming, performance art competition!
Typically, synchronized swimming demands advanced water skills and requires great strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry, and precise timing, as well as exceptional breath control. At WPA’s SynchroSwim, we celebrate creativity and enthusiasm. During the one-hour event, 8 artist teams will perform short, unique routines set to musical compositions. Some may actually be synchronized, but the vast majority will be a free expression of creativity. Past performances have included a biting critique of BP’s role in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, a battle between pollution and Captain Planet's Planeteers, a patriotic excerpt from Fluid Movement’s Star Spangled Swimmer, and even a performance by an actual synchronized swimming team.
This year's performances will be judged by: Dr. Melissa Chiu, Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Lauren Landau, Host of WAMU's Art Beat; and Doug Yeuell, Director of Atlas Performing Arts Center. The judges will rank the teams on a scale of 1 to 10 in two categories: Execution (the skill and coherence of their concept) and Visual Spectacle (the outrageousness of the team’s costumes and performance). Cash prizes will be awarded in these two categories, as well as for Crowd Favorite, which is decided by audience applause.

AETHER ART PROJECTS, Team captain Eames Armstrong leads team members Mandy Lineweber, and Rania Hassan in a performance of “Bermuda Love Triangle”.
DCFIT-TASTICS, Team captain Mary Flamingo Greer leads team members Coach Deana Cordova, Pilar Weiss, Ruth Gata Katz, Ruth Einsenberg, and Pam Larson in a performance of “A Flamingo Fantasy.”
DC SYNCHROMASTERS, Team captain Susan Horab leads team members Kristina Hopkins, AmyJo Foreman, Vicki Valosik, Kathy Navacues, and Chrissy Stabile in a synchronized swimming routine to "All About That Bass."
EMZKI, Team captain Emma Goodman O’Rourke features Renee Regan in a performance of “My Life in the Sunshine” with music by Roy Ayers.
THE FLIES, Team captain April Pink leads team members Marta Zoeliner, Mark Cameron, Joe Meduza, Barbara Wilgus, Sydney Pink, Paul Wilson, Caitlin Bouxein, and Laura Knapp in a performance of “The Human Fly”.
FLUID MOVEMENT, Team captain Patty Gallivan leads team members Ellen Jenkins, Katie Garber, Laura Smith, Mary Watkins, Amanda Barrett, Mile Sauria, and Jessica Hartman in a performance of “Unbreakable Dance Party”.
INTERGALACTION, Team captain Rebecca Ennen leads team members Marcel Estevez Montero, Sharon Goldtzvik, Yonathan Goldtzvik, Torie Partridge, Sylvie Shaffer, Keeli Sorensen, Farhan Syed, Nava Szwergold, and Donte Tates in a performance of “Space Medley”.
SYNCHROWAVE, Team captain Ekaterina Zharinova features Giselle Ruzany in a performance of “Last Day in Chaloklum”.
THICKER THAN WATER, Team captain DeLesslin George-Warren features Julie Rubin in a performance of “Blue Lips”, a Regina Spektor remix.
SynchroSwim 2015 is free and open to the public and takes place at the Capitol Skyline Hotel Pool, 10 I (eye) Street SW, Washington, DC following the Capitol Skyline Pool Party. Free admission to SynchroSwim 2015 will begin at 4:30pm.
