Have you ever thought about being a mentor to an LGBTQ high-school youth in the District of Columbia? Here's your chance. The DC Center has partnered with Mentors, Inc. for a Mentor Information Night on Tuesday January 6th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the DC Center, 2000 14th St NW, Suite 105.
Mentors, Inc is a 1-1 community based mentoring program whose mission is to increase the graduation rates and success of Washington DC's students by pairing them with caring, adult volunteers, in structured and enriched mentoring relationships, that promote their personal, academic and career development. Pairs are required to spend a minimum of 5-8 hours of face-to-face time together per month.
Mentors, Inc. will work to provide a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQ teens, educate on LGBTQ teen issues for the most effective mentoring, and recruit LGBTQ teens through agencies and through high school advocacy groups.
For this program, you should be over 21 and ready to commit one year or more to individually mentoring an LGBTQ youth. Before being paired, you will need to attend an interview, complete general and LGBTQ-specific classroom training, and complete reference and background checks.
On January 6, there will be an opportunity to meet and greet program staff and mentoring participants from Mentors Inc., to learn about the application process for being a volunteer mentor, and to get specific details about the mentorship program including training, matching, and overall expectations.
Join us on January 6 to learn more!
