Breaking the Silence: Our Military Stories

The OutWrite planning committee has confirmed three authors for the 3:30-4:30pm panel on Saturday August 3rd. The panel will feature the voices and works by Josh Seefried, Victor Ferenbach, and Marc Viola. Josh Seefried's book, Our Time, marks the end of more than a decade of silence, giving voice to the LGBT men and women who served under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Victor Ferenbach's autobiographical book Out Of The Blue tells the story of an air force officer who flew 88 combat missions - until authority figures tried to kick him out of the military because of his sexual orientation. Marc Viola, a straight ally of the LGBTQ community, will be presenting his book A Spy's Resume, which is a field manual that helps service-members re-adapt to peacetime civilian culture. Besides its observations on civilian life, the book speaks on the lack of inclusiveness in the military despite the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
