Gay Pulp Fiction: The Guild Press and Gay Identity

Please join us for a presentation by Phillip Clark entitled: Gay Pulp Fiction: The Guild Press and Gay Identity. This presentation will take place as part of the OutWrite LGBT Book Fair. Saturday August 4th at 2:00 PM at the DC Center for the LGBT Community, 1318 U Street NW. In the 1950s and 1960s, gay men were told by social institutions that they were sick, sinful, or criminal. Some gay writers fought back against these claims with angry, funny, or defiant words, insisting that homosexuality was natural and that gay community (and abundant sex...) awaited those with the courage to declare themselves. Local writer and editor Philip Clark will discuss the stories, magazines, and travel guides of Washington D.C.'s Guild Press and how they helped defy social stereotypes in the years before Stonewall. The OutWrite Book Fair will include several book and poetry readings, and literature discussions. Several book publishers will display and sell recently published LGBT books, and the DC Center will have over 1,000 used LGBT themed books for sale at the event. Find out more at www.outwritedc.org
