i like cobalt cause you can meet in the loungy area downstairs and have a quiet drink with a friend. then, depending on the mood, you can either head upstairs for the dance crown (warming: close quarters and very loud) or downstairs for dinner. or, well, home.

***** Loud but fun!
Posted: October 12, 2009
I'm not quite sure why this one building feels it has to have 3 names, but Cobalt/30 Degrees/whatever the first floor is called is a fun time. The music on the 3rd floor (Cobalt) was crazy loud, but the shirtless bartenders were hot, even if they had to make a drink twice 'cause they couldn't hear the order. The second floor (30 Degrees) had loungey seating and was packed with all they boys who wanted to hear themselves think. Fun!

***** Something different, but good

My first time and enjoyed my visit. Friendly and attractive crowd. Good music, small dance floor though. Sexual Energy was in the air. I'd return.

***** Fun for everyone

Cobalt and 30 Degrees is a great place for all types. 30 Degrees is on the second level (enter through the Level One restaurant on the street level) and has several couches and nooks for having a private conversation. The bartenders and staff are very friendly and welcoming. A DJ now regularly spins hot tunes on the 2nd level. Attracts all types and ages. Upstairs, Cobalt can get crowded--especially during their open bar hours--but I've always had fun. Shirtless bartenders are very friendly. Cobalt usually attracts a bit younger crowd. Having a conversation isn't especially easy, but you can go downstairs or outside for that. Music and lights keep the party going.

***** Great hangout and dance floor!!
Posted: May 28, 2009
Went during a vacation to DC. Seems small at first but fits right in somehow. The staff was friendly and just fine. The music was great that kept you dancing with mostly new songs. Crowd was small at 11pm but got packed a later on. Would definitely go again. This place seemed more modern and just a place to have fun, compared to the one where I live. Would definitely go again.

***** Bad on multiple levels.

The bartenders poor mediocre drinks, the crowd is snobby, the staff is rude, and basically, it's not much fun. Shocking that they can charge a cover.

***** the upstairs sucks
Posted: November 20, 2008
I do not understand why they made the upstairs a white box? it is like they are tring to be somthing they are not, I think the staff needs more personality, and the cc minimum is illegal

***** young & bitchy
Posted: May 30, 2008
The layout of the place it really nice, but the crowd was the young, gay, pretentious type at it's worst. If you're not already part of a hip-click, don't expect anyone to speak to you. I would skip the place altogether.

***** Martini's
Posted: April 29, 2008
This is a great place for Martini's with a welcoming atmosphere and less stuffy than some others along the 17th St strip! Worth the visit - great on weekends!

***** Full of attractive younger guys

This is clearly the "hot spot" in Dupont. I went on a Thursday and the crowd started rolling in around 11 for the "Batlle of the Briefs" at 12. The downstairs lounge area feels like a high end living room, upstairs is a mid-size dance floor with shirtless (and hot) bartenders. I'd agree with the other reviewers that the crowd here is young, cute and keenly aware of fashion - yep, diesel t-shirts and trendy haircuts everywhere.

***** Uber Trendy Fashionistas Throwing Shade.

These bars are places you will either LOVE or HATE! VERY popular, but it can be very painful to those who don't fit the "gay standards" of the self-professed arbiters of what is, or is not, good enough for them. If you are young, thin, chic, and into what is "IN" this very second, this is the place for you. Very close to 4 other gay bars on the same strip.

***** Fun place!
First to Review - March 06, 2006
Cobalt is a loud, crowded, and FUN place to be after midnight on a Friday or Saturday! Downstairs is a lounge area (called 30 Degrees because of the blast of chilly air that blows near the bar); upstairs has a small, but hopping, dance area that features some terrific techno DJs and hot, shirtless bartenders. Cobalt is 21+, and the crowd tends to be on the young side of that, but there's enough of an age mix that somewhat older folks (like me) still fit in. Friday and Saturday are the best nights, of course, but Cobalt has karaoke on Sunday nights; a very popular '80s music night on Tuesdays; and the "Best Package Contest" on Thursdays. Finally, you didn't hear this from me, but after 2 am on weekends, Cobalt is probably one of the better places in DC to meet cute guys for short-term relationships.
